Sophia (9) is one of the two children found HIV+ during the HIV/AIDS testing at STAO. Her mother left the family after discovering her own positive status and her father, lame after a crocodile attack while fishing, was left unable to care for her. Sophia lived with a caretaker in Mafubira, who would often beat Sophia and torture her by withholding food. She had not been able to go to school or see her family for the two years she had been with the abusive caretaker. Discovering her positive status brought light to her abusive situation and she lives happily at STAO and attends school there.
